White House Announces Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
